Hello, my name is Mike Scott.

I’m from South Africa. I was born in Johannesburg on the 5th October, 1982. My full name’s Michael David Petrie Scott.

From a booklet detailing the South African animation delegation going to the Annecy International Animation Festival 2013 in France:

I went to Michaelhouse boarding school in Natal, studied half a Fine Arts degree at Rhodes in Grahamstown (I was doing fine, left on my own volition :), I’m in the Golden Key Society (I’m not sure what that is), I have a BComm (Business of Communication) degree from Bond University and was placed on the Dean’s List for Academic Excellence (huh), I was one of 15 Africans that took part in UNESCO’s ‘Africa Animated! 2.0’ 5-week training workshop in 2005 and I have an ‘Advanced Certificate of Animation’ diploma from NEMISA & Algonquin College. I’ve been doing animation experiments and drawing comics for a long time but officially I’ve been in animation professionally 10 years from about the start of 2015.

I started my career proper by co-pitching an idea for an animated show. I made a 4-minute pilot that was picked up by a local studio and broadcaster. I started out making lots of coffee for the 2 veteran animators and doing odd jobs, and slowly graduated to animating 5/6 minutes (full episodes) every two weeks. I soon went freelance after taking myself to San Diego ComiCon in 2006 and seeing Pen Ward present his ‘Adventure Time’ pilot. That kind of did it for me. I was like “OK I’m doing cool stuff from now on” and have since then worked for various studios / companies / individuals both locally and internationally. I’ve been nominated 3 times for ‘Best Music Video’ at the South African Music Awards, have won an MK award for a Goldfish video, had my work featured on CartoonBrew a couple times, worked with many of my hero’s, visited some rad studios like Pixar and Studio AKA, and generally been having a flippen’ cool time.

I like to make nice things, run, swim, cycle, surf, sit at coffee shops and draw comics, read up on the history of other animation shows and talk about animation with people. I like working with skilled and competent people.

Get in touch with me if you’d like to say hi or whatever.
